Thyroid No Surgery 101: No Routine or Screening Thyroid Ultrasound.
Routine Thyroid cancer screening by ultrasound can lead to unnecessary biopsy and even surgery.
Just Say No
Clinical indications must be present to protect you from having a small micro-nodule biopsied
and yes even sending you to an unnecessary thyroid surgery.
Thyroid ultrasound should be limited to evaluations in patients with known risk factors for cancer, such as family history of thyroid cancer or radiation exposure, and palpable thyroid gland abnormalities such as nodules or goiter. Abnormal thyroid blood tests especially thyroid antibodies is another indication.
If you do not have any of these indications just say no.
If in doubt you can get my opinion on the need for an ultrasound BEFORE you have one.
