Thyroid Functional Medicine: Not a Good Idea if you have a thyroid problem.

What Dr. Mark Hyman, functional medicine physician says About Thyroid Health
The thyroid plays a crucial role in metabolism.
I agree with that.
Don’t believe this is possible.
“If your thyroid isn’t at its best, cellular metabolism will slow — affecting your waistline and every organ, every system,”
Does he mean it is producing enough thyroid for your body?
Hyman, director of the Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Functional Medicine and a bestselling author, says simply monitoring thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) isn’t enough.
Yes, A normal TSH is all that is needed in 99% of the cases to determine that you are not fat from hypothyroidism.
He also tests reverseT3, free T3, free T4, and thyroid antibodies and considers factors ranging from food allergies to vitamin deficiencies.
None of these are needed to determine if your thyroid function is causing “leaky gut.
Once a problem has been identified, Hyman goes beyond prescribing a pill and incorporates diet, exercise, and reduction of stress and inflammation into a treatment plan.
What problem? There is no thyroid hormone problem if the TSH is normal
Since when is hypothyroidism treated by a drug store or pharmacist?
“Part of the blind spot in medicine is that we’ve ignored this huge category of substances in food that have huge ability to alter our biology,” Hyman said, according to WKSU.
“Nutrients in food affect your gene expression, they change your hormones, they change your immune system, they change your gut flora with every bite. They change your metabolism, they change literally everything in your body in real time all the time.”
This is pseudoscience and not serious consideration for thyroid function.
Gut flora has nothing to do with thyroid function
Hyman outlined six steps to heal the thyroid on his website.
1. Eliminate the causes of thyroid problems — These could include gluten sensitivities and food allergies; mercury, fluoride and chlorinated water; pesticides and other toxins; chronic stress.
None of this has anything to do with why you become hypothyroid.
2. Incorporate vigorous exercise and sauna use —
Exercise stimulates the thyroid, and saunas help detoxify your system.
There is no evidence that going to the gym or soaking in a sauna can revive a slow thyroid.
Dr. Brownstein: Your Tiny Thyroid Causing Big Problems3. Eat foods that support thyroid health and avoid those that interfere —
Hyman recommends a whole-food, organic diet, including such foods as seaweed, sea vegetables, fish, dandelion, mustard, dark leafy greens, smelt, herring, scallops, and Brazil nuts.
Great to eat but none helps your thyroid recover and seaweed can damage your thyroid from excess iodine.
4. Use supplements — Multivitamin and mineral supplements that include selenium, iodine, zinc, vitamins A and D, and omega 3 fats are recommended by Hyman.
Again none proven to help thyroid function and iodine is contraindicated if you have a thyroid disease.Billion dollar supplement industry based on no facts are useless for hypothyroid patients.
5. Undergo tests to assess thyroid health — Monitor TSH, free T4 and free T3, and thyroid antibodies.
In certain types of thyroid disease these may be necessary, but to answer the question if you are sick from a thyroid deficiency TSH is the gold standard
6. Take thyroid hormone replacement medicine — Synthroid is the most common drug used to treat thyroid disorders, but others, including Armour thyroid, should be considered.
Synthroid is the gold standard and Armour, and generics are not indicated.
No Armour pig thyroid
Again he is dead wrong. Obesity is a disease on it’s own.Hypothyroid onset can add a few pounds, but never 30-100 pounds seen with obesity.
Example is the 300 Pound female who swears she is hypothyroid as the cause.
When she was first diagnosed and hypothyroid she might have added 10 pounds due to deficient thyroid function.
However, when she was completely replaced by 6 months, she still was obese at 285-290!
She was hypothyroid and now she is treated hypothyroid and she is still grossly obese.
Thyroid has nothing to do with serious obesity, and treatment with thyroid is banned in Boston.
Thyroid patients should not see functional medicine types for treatment when an endocrinologist would be better for them.
