Advanced Master’s Training for Endocrinologists Interested in Treating Their Own Patients with Radiofrequency Ablation( RFA)
Thyroid RFA is nearing approval in the US for treating benign thyroid nodules. Those high volume ECNU certified physicians can begin the process to learn Thyroid RFA by attending an introductory course. This course does not include actual treatment of patients, but simulates treatment with an assortment of models. How it works is explained.
Beef “nodule” in a gelatin mold is treated with 30 watts. Experience in free hand USG FNA parallel approach is needed for RFA .
The target nodules are measured for volume.
The 10 mm tip is moved around in the nodule to ablate 10 mmm sections at a time.
Detailed lectures on the equipment and how it operates, and complications will be covered. The use of Bovine liver and gelatin models can mimic many of the skills needed. Practice models can train you to simulate thyroid capsule lidocaine injection, moving danger structures away from the target nodule by injection of dextrose between them. Called Microdissection or dextrose avoidance method. Small hot tips 7 mm instead of the usual 10 can be used to simulate lymph node treatment.
The 3 day advanced Thyroid RFA training course is available to high volume potential interventional thyroidologists and can include ethanol ablation of cysts and thyroid cancers.
