Alternative Radiofrequency Ablation RFA Therapy to surgery for Thyroid Microcancers PTMC ?
Zhang et al Thyroid Aug 18 2016
90 papillary microcancers PTMC were ablated to slightly beyond their capsule by moving shot method. At 3 months a core needle biopsy was negative for persistence or recurrence. 96% resolved in 12 months. No lymph nodes or tumor was found. RFA was well tolerated without low complication rate. RFA can rid the patient of a micro-cancer and could be an alternative strategy for treatment to surgery or active surveillance for PTMC.
Comment: We do not have RFA for thyroid lesions in the USA, and send them to Asia or Europe for solid benign thyroid nodules at present. I do not know of any other data on RFA use for thyroid cancer.
