Thyroid 101: Potassium Iodide: Protection From Dirty Bomb or Nuclear Accident

DR.Guttler’s comments:

  1. Potassium iodide  KI protects the thyroid gland from radioactive iodine exposure.
  2. It prevents the thyroid gland from taking up radioactive forms of iodine that may be released in the event of a Chernobyl-type accident or dirty bomb attack.
  3. Ingesting or breathing radioactive iodine presents serious long-term risks, including thyroid cancer.
  4. Potassium iodide shields the thyroid by saturating it with so much iodine that it can absorb the dangerous Radioactive released from the accident or attack.
  5. The best protection in any case is evacuation — which protects the whole body, not just the thyroid gland.
  6. Potassium iodide itself is a low to health, though there may be side effects and allergies.
  7. It is the same compound used to make iodized salt.
  8. US Government has a stockpiles of KI in every area of the country. You do not need to get a KI RX from your physician.
  9. If you do they do not expire as KI is stable long term.
