Dr.Guttler’s Comments.

  1. Most of the extra cases of thyroid cancer recently are considered overdiagnoses.
  2.  If we not detected the cancers using our diagnostic tests, most of these patients would never have been bothered by them and  in most cases, surgery wasn’t necessary to prevent death for thyroid cancer.
  3. Screening recommendations except for familial thyroid cancers do not exist for thyroid cancer.
  4. Physicians were practicing defensive medicine offering more tests than necessary to ward off malpractice lawsuits from patients whose cancer was missed.
  5. The practice of defensive medicine is known to occur in other areas of medicine.
  6. Thyroid cancer, most malpractice lawsuits are related to delayed diagnoses.
  7. Patients sue their physicians for missing their cancer, citing negligence.
  8. These high-risk malpractice climates are driving physicians to diagnose thyroid cancer in people who really don’t benefit from the diagnosis and treatment.
  9. It’s hurting people not just financially but also medically.”

What did we learn.

Avoid screening studies for thyroid cancer including unnecessary thyroid ultrasounds, biopsies leading to unnecessary thyroid surgery. No ultrasound or biopsy without an indication.
