The first operation is the most important operation. Pre-surgery ultrasound on the neck can find and diagnose local regional lymph node involvement and change the surgery to include a complete compartmental resection to follow the total thyroidectomy. Do it right the first time.

Detailed endocrine neck ultrasound needs to be done on all thyroid cancer patients BEFORE the first surgery.
