Thyroid Ethanol Ablation PEI 101: The Equipment for Cystic thyroid and parathyroid nodules and thyroid cancer recurrent lymph nodes.
PEI is a simple procedure done in my office with an ultrasound to guide the needle to the center of the cyst or inside the cancer lymph node. Ethanol medical grade is injected after the cyst fluid is removed. Simple tubing, 3 way stopcock and syringes are all that is needed in the hands of an expert interventional thyroidologist. The 1 cc TB syringe is used for the small volume injected into cancer lymph nodes while 50cc syringes may be needed to remove the fluid from a large thyroid or parathyroid cyst. Each PEI done in my office in place of a thyroid surgery in the hospital saves >$35-50,000. Also the complication rate for PEI is rare compared to thyroid surgery in the hands of local low volume surgeons.
Warning: Your primary physician and his surgeon may put you off of having PEI and push toward surgery in their local hospital. They will tell you it is not safe,is painful and you should have surgery. This is all wrong. I have been doing PEI for over 10 years without a single serious complication. The whole procedure takes an average of 10-20 minutes depending of the size of the cyst and 5 minutes for recurrent thyroid lymph node cancers.
