Thyroid No Surgery 101: Two Non-Surgery Options for Small <1.5 cm Micro-papillary Cancers.
- Active Surveillance: A deferred follow up system keeping the cancer in the neck and only if it grows >3 mm over time will there ever by a rescue surgery.
- Ablation of the primary micro cancer by either ethanol PEI or Radiofrequency RFA ablation.
- RFA article by S. M. HA International J.Hyperthermia 33(8)May 2017
- 10/54 micro-papillary cancer patients were enrolled.
Case example: 31 Y/O female with a hypoechoic nodule A seen in right lobe. Biopsy proven micro-papillary.
B) An echogenic totally ablated cancer with the electrode seen at arrows.
C) one month the nodule has been ablated with no residual untreated areas.
D) One year later complete absence of the cancer.
Comments: These ten cases show how alternative RFA therapy can be used in cases that refuse surgery and don’t want the cancer in their neck for years with active surveillance.
