Thyroid No Surgery 101: What Thyroid Conditions Can be Safely Treated Without Surgery or Radiation by radioiodine with Radiofrequency Ablation RFA.

  1. Benign Thyroid Nodules that are causing you symptoms such as trouble swallowing, or the nodule is sticking out and is a cosmetic problem. No need for thyroid replacement therapy after RFA.
  2. Thyroid Nodules that are functioning and causing depression of the TSH, or overt overactive thyroid. These are called AFTN ( Hot Nodules) or are toxic nodules with hyperthyroidism. Prior to RFA treatment was surgery or radiation ( radioiodine).
  3. Some Thyroid cancers are also treated with RFA.
  4. First, is recurrent thyroid cancer in neck lymph nodes after prior neck dissection.
  5. Also small primary papillary thyroid cancers that are <1.5 cm and would be a candidate for surgery or active surveillance AS ( long term Follow up) can be treated with RFA. Much better than AS or surgery.
  6. Thyroglossal Duct Cysts can be treated with RFA in place of Sistrunk Neck surgery without a scar.
  7. Parathyroid Adenoma with high calcium and parathyroid hormone can be treated without surgery with RFA.
