Thyroid No Surgery 101: Why you need to be sure surgery is the correct option for you.
Always get outside expert opinion before you go to surgery.
Your life may depend on it. Thyroid surgery when it is not indicated or there are alternatives put you at risk of major complications and even death.
Recent “routine” thyroid surgery in England ended in the death of the patient. Though rare, a blood vessel that looked secure at surgery can break open while in recovery or even in your hospital room. This is an emergency as the patient can choke to death if the nursing staff does not get an emercency tracheostomy in place ASAP.
In my 40 years I have had this happen even in the hans of a thyroid surgeon. The patient was in a head and neck ward with a tracheostomy kit at the bedside. One case was a singer with thyroid cancer and was saved and returned without the trach in 2 weeks. His voice was saved.
How to prevent complications from thyroid surgery.
1. Make sure you need the surgery.
2. Find a high volume thyroid surgeon to decrease complication rate.
3. Make sure a trachostomy kit is at your bedside after the surgery.
