Thyroid Nodules in Kids 101: How Common?
1.Thyroid nodules are less common among children but are more likely to be malignant. (22% vs 5%).
2. Estimates from ultrasound (US) and postmortem examination suggest that 1%–1.5% of children and up to 13% of older adolescents or young adults have thyroid nodules.
3. Large Japanese series using high-resolution US confirm the incidence of solid nodules at 1.65% but also identified cystic lesions in 57% of children and adolescents.
4.The prevalence of thyroid nodules is much greater in children than is generally appreciated.
Comments: Careful thyroid Ultrasound evaluation of children with Hashimoto’s for suspicious nodules is needed.
