  1. 23,000 thyroid surgeries in 2014
  2. The indications for the surgeries were too broad.
  3. Benign thyroid nodules causing symptoms should not have surgery with less invasive alternatives exist in 2019.
  4. Cystic and solid benign nodules can be treated by either ethanol PEI or Radiofrequency ablation RFA.
  5. This would decrease the number of readmissions below 1,000/year to only those having a reason for the surgery such as having cancer issues by biopsy and molecular marker studies.
  6. 4 percent were hospitalized again within 30 days. Most of these patients were readmitted within a week after surgery. Of the patients that needed readmission, 25 percent returned within two days, the researchers found.
