Clear fluid parathyroid cyst but they can look exactly like thyroid cysts when they hemorrhage.

A 63-year-old woman with a parathyroid cyst.

Transverse (A) and sagittal (B) ultrasonography reveals a lobulated pure cystic mass (arrows) in the inferior aspect of the left thyroid gland. After treatment with ethanol, the lesion disappeared completely.

Comments:

  1. Radiologists were late to the idea of using US to find and diagnose parathyroid disease.
  2. Endocrinologists certified in endocrine neck  have been leading the way.
  3. ECNU  certified sonologists found increasing numbers of parathyroid incidentalomas (PTIs).
  4. We pioneered the needle washout for PTH and TG to separate thyroid from parathyroid nodules and cysts.
  5. Recurrent parathyroid cysts or ones with bleeding tendencies need ethanol ablation PEI

Don’t go to surgery for parathyroid adenoma without an endocrine neck ultrasound and if needed a gentle non-aggressive needle washout for PTH/TG.
