On birthdays, many South Koreans eat seaweed soup in the morning. After giving birth, mothers eat this brownish translucent broth swimming with seaweed, believing the nutrients will boost postnatal recovery. The risk that excessive consumption of seaweed can cause thyroid malfunction.One bowl of seaweed soup contains approximately 1,705 micrograms of iodine, almost six times the daily recommended iodine intake. Patients with certain thyroid conditions, high intake of iodine can be dangerous.
Comment: In the USA the majority of citizens get adequate iodine intake with food.( 300 mcgs /day). Supplements with iodine, seaweed or Kelp can cause high levels of iodine and cause thyroid patients to become hypothyroid,hyperthyroid and grow nodules and stimulate cancer cell growth.Seaweed soup has way too much iodine in each bowl.
