Thyroid No Surgery 101: What is it worth to not have surgery and a neck scar treating your benign thyroid nodule?
2 years after ethanol ablation PEI. Large left nodule is reduced to 2% of the original size.
40 Y/O female with a large benign thyroid nodule with symptoms and was told to have surgery. She came to me for an alternative to thyroid surgery.
Visible mass in her left neck.
Ultrasound showing a 63 ml 6.1 cm cystic nodule. This is equal to 6 10 ml red top tubes for blood testing. After a benign biopsy the fluid was removed and 200 proof medical grade ethanol was injected and removed.
The procedure took 15 minutes without a local. She had no pain and no complications and left in 45 minutes.
Post PEI 2 years and the size of the residual nodule was 1.4 ml, 1.5 cm or a 98 % decrease.
2 year Post PEI follow up visits were uneventful. She was happy the ugly symptomatic nodule was not causing her choking anymore.
Call me to get the details of how to avoid surgery and see if you are a candidate for minimally invasive ablation therapy instead of thyroid surgery. Save your thyroid gland and keep it in the neck where it belongs instead of the mason jar in a pathologists lab.
