Thyroid No Surgery Rule #1-2: No Screening Thyroid Ultrasounds, and no biopsy if you have an ultrasound without an endocrine consult as many nodules DO Not Need Biopsy.
New York Times in Science section July 18th discussed the dangers of screening medical testing without a clinical indication. A thyroid ultrasound ordered by your physician without a true indication can lead to a thyroid biopsy, and even surgery for no reason. The screening thyroid ultrasound can add millions to the national health care bill. Thyroid ultrasound has a high rate of finding harmless small nodules, and biopsies have a high rate of suspicious but benign nodules at surgery. One surgery adds $50,000 to the cost of medical care. Also there is a risk of complications when you go to surgery for a suspicious nodule that is benign and should never have been imaged or biopsied.
