105 patients had a thyroidectomy for thyroid disease and 420 controls. All tests of physical and mental health were significantly worse for the surgery patients. A thyroidectomy reduces the QOL compared to a healthy population attending a health screening center. Psychiatric consultation or supportive care may be helpful for the patients with low mental health scores.
Comments:
Thyroid surgery for whatever reason can have bad effects on the patients physical and mental health.
I suggest a second opinion by expert thyroidologists before any thyroid surgery. There are non-surgical approaches to many thyroid conditions that used to be treated by surgery alone. Ethanol ablation for thyroid complex cysts,radiofrequency ablation for large solid benign nodules( >8 ml ) and Echotherapy ( HIFU ) for smaller solid nodules (
