ABCs of Thyroid Non-Surgical Ablation Techniques
Three types of Techniques to ablate recurrent thyroid cancer lymph nodes.
Ethanol PEI Major role in treating thyroid and parathyroid cysts when they have >80% cyst fluid. Less effective when the cyst content fluid is 50-80%. Complex cyst can be treated with ethanol followed by laser or RFA. Also is used for thyroid cancer lymph nodes.
Radiofrequency ablation RFA: Thermal ablation method for complex cysts , and spongiform nodules.Less success with solid nodules.
Laser: Similar to RFA for solid nodules especially spongiform. Can be used to treat cancer lymph nodes.
Treatment of primary micropapillary cancer is still experimental.
Active surveillance and surgery are still the first line treatment.
Microwave Ablation MWA and high intensity focused ultrasound HIFU are new and still preliminary but is being used in Europe and Asia
