One of the first papers on the use of Thyroid RF by endocrinologists in an office setting will be presented at AACE 2020 in May in Washington DC. These 12 cases were done in my ultrasound room with local Lidocaine only. They had only minor pain and swelling and no major complications. This is the preliminary evaluation before a large study of 80-120 cases will be undertaken by multiple endocrinologists doing RF in their office.
Thyroid and Parathyroid RF treatment is on then horizon and will change how endocrinologists practice. There will be continued decrease the need for thyroid surgery as thyroid RF is used for micro-papillary thyroid cancers and some well located parathyroid adenomas.
This is a wake up call to ECNU certified endocrinologists doing their own neck ultrasounds and USGFNAs to get trained in Thyroid RF now.
