Insulin resistance causes thyroid functional abnormalities.Enlarged thyroid gland, more nodules and cancer are the most important. Metformin treatment decreases goiter size, less nodules and cancer by inhibiting growth of thyroid cells, and decreasing TSH levels. Metformin may be a tool for treatment of patient with thyroid disease. More studies needed.
