Thyroid Papillary Microcancers Treated without Surgery
Thyroid papillary Microcancers < 1.3 cm can be followed without surgery by active surveillance, but for those who want the small cancer ablated but still do not want surgery, a study by Dr.Ian Hay and colleagues at Mayo clinic treated 15 microcancers with ethanol ablations. 1-3 sessions with most needing 1-2 injections and 5 needed 3 injections. The mdian tumor size was 8 mm.A median of 0.9cc ethanol was used. There was local tenderness for solving in 1-2 days. Follow up was from 1/2 half year to 6 years. 92% reduction in tumor size. 6/15 disappeared. 9/15 were still seen but mean volume reduced to 73%. Doppler blood flow was lost in all 15. The cost savings at Mayo was $40,000 per patient. Ethanol ablation is a safe alternative to surgery in those who do not want active surveillance but want the tumor ablated.
