Why a Good Thyroid evaluation is needed in a case of parathyroid adenoma hyperparathyroidism.
Parathyroid adenoma and thyroid carcinoma
The incidence of thyroid carcinoma in patients with hyperparathyroidism has been reported as higher than expected. We record our experience with 272 cases of primary hyperparathyroidism. Malignant thyroid lesions were found in 11.4%. We conclude that this is more than a fortuitous association.
1 in 10 cases (11% of 272 cases) of hyperparathyroidism had a thyroid cancer found at surgery.
1976 paper by Livolsi et al but makes the point to have the thyroid evaluated before surgery to look for thyroid nodules or a parathyroid adenoma inside the thyroid.Neck ultrasound and if in doubt have an certified endocrine neck sonologist do a gentle biopsy to collect PTH and TG from the nodules.
It is to late once you have the surgery to find a thyroid cancer in a thyroid nodule associated with the parathyroid adenoma.
