HIFU for Benign Solid Thyroid Nodules? Mixed Results
Kovatcheva et al studied 20 patients size 5 ml =- 2.8 ml with high intensity focused ultrasound. The volume reduction varied from 47%+- 24%. The high Doppler blood flow nodules and hypoechoic nodules had the least response. Complications were minor local edema, and skin redness.
It again appears that this method may need multiple sessions to get maximum shrinkage of benign nodules and is limited by the size of the nodules. Larger nodules may need RFA ( radiofrequency ablation) or surgery. Also smaller nodules may not need anything if they are not causing symptoms or are a cosmetic problem.
