Patient was told to have surgery because of her large nodule with local symptoms and becoming a cosmetic problem.

Ultrasound above shows a 25 ml 5 cm cystic nodule. Thyroid tests were normal and the biopsy was benign class II.

The patient returned to have ethanol ablation. She was taken to the ultrasound treatment room in my office. Prepped and after determining then size of the cyst the 200 proof ethanol was readied for injection after the cyst was evacuated. Under USG the #22 needle was placed in the center of the cyst cavity. 23 ml fluid removed and 11 ml of ethanol injected. After 5 minutes the ethanol was removed. The whole procedure took 10 minutes. After 30 minutes she left my office with a small circle band aide in place. She had no pain or complications and returned to work afterward. The follow up evaluations revealed that the cyst was not an issue cosmetically and the marked reduction in size 5 cm to 0.9 cm caused removal of her symptoms.

  1. No hospital
  2. No surgery
  3. 10 minute treatment in my office.
  4. Reduced cost compared to surgery.
  5. Unlikely to cause serious complications compared to surgery.
