What do you expect after thyroid RFA treatment for your benign nodule?
Example: 3 ml benign growing before RFA ablation.
Recent webinar on RFA from Johns Hopkins details the 0ne month and six moth results in one of their cases. Note early reduction in six is small ( 12%) compared to the extra six month reduction ( 67% ).
Total size reduction at 6 months was 71%.
Early after ablation. 1.18 ml
At 6 months reduced to 1 ml.
What are the chances you will need a second treatment?
Five year follow up study of 1600 asymptomatic nodules 1.5 ml volume. Only 15% grew, 70% had no growth, and 18% decreased in size.
This suggests it would be prudent to treat the growing nodules when they were small even if they don’t have symptoms or cosmetic issue yet.
The size to begin RFA is if the 1.5 ml nodule grew to > 2-3 ml.
What is then expected reduction in size after thyroid RFA ?
Solid nodules expect 70% reduction.
Cystic nodules with < 80 Cystic fluid 80% reduction.
Expect up to 33% might need a second treatment if their size nodule is > 20 ml.
A second treatment should not be done until effect of the first session is observed at 8-9 months.
The most important issue for you is to pick an experienced operator to do the procedure.
The USA has only recently had approval for RFA for thyroid nodules.
Most US operators are new at thyroid RFA. Most are surgeons trying to hold on to their thyroid nodule patients by recently learning thyroid RFA.
Why you should consider my center for your RFA treatment because I was the first US physician to begin training with Korean systems for 5 years.

My price for RFA is one of the lowest in the USA. You are awake with local Lidocaine used. With no CPT codes all costs are out of pocket. Range of fees are from $6000 for my procedure to $ 15-25,000 done at major centers with general anesthesia
